sometimes we're all silly

How much would you love/hate it if BYU got rid of its sports teams?

    • Stuart Call I would leave

    • Gabrielle Nebeker Richardson dislike.
      Wednesday at 22:17 ·
    • Alex Christman Considering the fact that the school services its alumni and sports fans more than its students, it would be a pretty sad day if sports were to leave the school. We'd have nothing instead of next-to-nothing.
      Wednesday at 22:22 ·
    • Alexis Danielle Lopez LOVE but college athletics bring the most money into universities. I don't know how it works for byu since it is private.
      Wednesday at 22:32 ·
    • Nate Stebbing you should write in the Vanguard about it

    • Shawn Carl Watkins I don't know why anyone would ever even suggest such an idea

To be quite honest, I don't think it would make a big difference in my life, other than less funding perhaps.

I'm a bit of a walking paradox myself, I'll silently cheer for byu in my head, but I find raving byu football fans annoying. Also, there's the question of evil within college sports in general. These kids are busting up their bodies and not getting paid (except for tuition and the chance of going pro and then making lots of money) and like Lexy says, college athletics do bring most of the money into universities, so shouldn't those who participate in athletics get some piece of the money pie?

That's my rant about it. All in all, I think I would be okay if BYU got rid of its sports teams.
    • Alexis Danielle Lopez Rachel, we agree on something! I think that college athletes should get some sort of compensation also.
    • Yoni Stubbs They do. College athletes get paid. They get paid a lot. A college football player flew my roommate to Michigan to see his game. He paid for it with money he got from playing Michigan football.
    • Alexis Danielle Lopez Pay for play is currently illegal due to amateur laws and NCAA guidelines.
    • Yoni Stubbs well, they get bonuses of some kind haha.
    • Alexis Danielle Lopez Some do get money, but it is against the rules, and if caught they will no longer be eligible to play, and the university may also be punished.
    • Alex Hairston BYU-Idaho tried that, didn't they? Does that school still exist?
    • Yoni Stubbs They get money depending on their scholarship and how much the school wants them to play for them. Meaning most of the players get money, and gift baskets, and other bonuses depending on the scholarship.
    • Yoni Stubbs Honey... I've dated more football players than you could ever want to. All of them received at least $500 cash a month. Get your facts straight or talk to football players who are good enough that actually get paid and don't sit on the bench. -Yoni's roommate

A stipend is part of a scholarship but paying a college athlete cash or giving bonuses based on how they play is illegal. Colleges can give out around 82 football scholarships. The amount of athletic scholarships has to be evenly distributed between girls and guys due to title 9. I don't care how many football players you have dated and what they have told you. I follow sports and the rules that come with them especially when it comes to college sports. Have you heard of a player named Reggie Bush who just lost the heisman and his team the national championship, and school scholarships and bowl eligibilty? He was payed to play! Have you heard of Cam Newton the kid who is currently undergoing investigation because he might have asked a school he turned down to pay him to play? Look it up. It is against the rules to pay players to play. They can be given an athletic scholarship but that is it. Fans or the school can't give them money or gifts for playing.

    • Alexis Danielle Lopez I also want you to know I don't need or want to date anyone you have. I am very happy with my future husband. Sports are important to me not just the people who play them. I am not that shallow, but you can keep on jersey chasing.

    • Brady Stewart it would be the next BYU-I. it's not that bad...err maybe it is.

    • Rachel Marie Mitchell Honey... $500 cash a month isn't too insane for college students to collect on an awesome scholarship. However $500 cash a month for a salary is VERY insane.
    • Rachel Marie Mitchell Especially if you keep in consideration that MOST of your college sweethearts will not be picked for the pros and that it is very likely they will have serious injuries that may make it difficult for them to work later on.

    • Yoni Stubbs Move on. Let it go. Agree to disagree. If only for Parker's sake.
    • Alexis Danielle Lopez
You agree to disagree on opinions. Look up NCAA guidelines on this issue. I don't think you realized what Rachel and I were talking about. Just google the words "pay to play college" and you will get tons of articles.

I apologize to Parker, but seriously the difference between a scholarship that includes a monthly stipend and being paid based on performance and the money you are making the school is huge.

I find this whole this hilarious. Arguing is gay, but arguing digitally is even more gay. haha. I guess we all do it sometime, though I must say this is my first. I am ashamed. But not really, it was funny.

I want to change the world...instead i sleep.

I haven't felt like blogging for a while. Yeah. I know it's only been like a week. I'm one of those people.
Inception=fart machine. Inception used to equal raunchy strip tease but now it equals fart machine. My brother brought his to the movies when we went over Thanksgiving vacation. It was the silent part right after the commercials and before the show when everyone anticipation is running high when suddenly in the chair right ahead of us holding the male counterpart of a couple lets out this hUUGgge farting sound. Immediately my family starts laughing. The girl counterpart goes, "Was that YOU!?" to the male counterpart and starts laughing which then causes my mom to laugh so hard she starts to cry. It was brilliant.
We went four wheeling up at Fish Lake in feet of snow. It whas funnn. I found a perfect tree for our apartment, well...actually Kevin found the tree. I just approved. Michelle and I snuggly snugged at G-ma's and found a bunch of boxes in the closet of our room. There were black and white pictures, letters from my great great grandma, teeth, rattle snake rattles...yeah those last two jumped out at us, gross. It was so cool to all that really old stuff. I'm glad I can actually appreciate it now too.
I've been seeing many attractive mustaches around campus lately. Today I realized that it was no-shave november or movember this past month. Sad that most of the boys will shave them away now. I was so excited that so many boys were looking so pretty. That happened to me another time when BYU had an "ugly sweater" day around campus. I was seeing so many lovely sweaters and thinking, "Yes. Go byu for being so awesome." Then I found out about the day and was crushed. Sad it has to end.
I like snow. I like having a warm body when my face is about to fall off from cold. Last night we went to see Savior of the World. It was interesting. Supposedly the second half was real good. Amber and I were bad people and left at intermission though, so I don't really know. We walked around temple square then went to the tippy top of the Joseph Smith Memorial building. The view of Temple Square is beautiful there. We talked happy talk then played in the elevators. Seriously. If you haven't ever ridden in one of those elevators. Do it. They're so fast. When you jump you almost hit the ceiling. But make sure someone doesn't unexpectedly stop the elevator at a level you weren't expecting or else you'll go crashing to the floor, end up in a heap, and surprise the people that opened the elevator door at the unexpected floor. Ryan and Ally decided to be kind souls and come pick us up at the JS Memorial building so we didn't have to walk, they stayed which makes them good souls as well. We entertained ourselves by reading the candles they had with the word Joy on it in different languages. Surprise! Amber and I speak over twelve languages, as we proved to the very amused janitor mopping the floor. I love the holidays. I love not being in school. I love lovely people.
Ally and I are learning songs. Guitar and Ukulele songs. I'm going to learn the banjo over Christmas break. cool.

"life is a series of images that change as they repeat themselves"

I'm working on "Shakespeare stinky stinky", as my paper is saved in my computer. Yeahhh, then only one more day of work then ally-amber-joni day a.k.a watch movies all day in bed cuddling then it's turkey day! with christmas tree cutting, snowmobiling, late night chatting, and of course, eating until you want to throw up. With plenty of homework on the side of course.
Melancholy happiness. We watched Heima tonight. How I adore Sigur Ros.
Someone actually made an intellegent comment on Youtube. Thus is goes,

"This song is about everything and anything you can imagine. It caan be memories, can be hope, can be love or even hate. What distinguishes this group with anothers is that these guys try to create a unique sound, where the lyrcis have no meaning whatsoever. You need to create your own meaning, you know because this musicians don't tell you how to feel, like many other musicians do..they just create the armony and it's your job to create significance."

I love that, "you need to create your own meaning". That is life. It is handed you the way it is and you make it what you will. This song reminds me of my senior year in high school, Advanced Theatre mostly. There I became aware of my life, I woke up, I learned to honestly want to create meaning in my life. But I wouldn't go back because I've learned so much, experienced so much, and changed so much since.
Over and over I thank God for those people that he has put in my life. When I look at my life, I see those around me. The people that were there in my life at a certain time were placed there to teach me something. Each group of people I passed through was tailor made to fit my needs at the time. When I examine who I am, I see the goodness and hate of people past and present in the mirror.
You know how hurts, risks, joy, love, and a thousand other emotional experiences stay with you? Well Advanced Theatre was the first of those experiences that made ground, that really pushed me into wanting more from life. I think that's why I'm feeling this melancholy happiness as I reflect on what I've done since that experience.
Life is this great expanse of time that goes by in an instant. I find myself looking only at the moment when I should be looking behind and forward as well. Only then will I accept myself for who I am, embrace what I'm not and move forward without having to qualify everything I do and say to myself.
